Writing Character-Driven Dialogue

Guest speaker Katharine Coldiron Mason

Please join the San Gabriel Valley Women Writers on Saturday morning, February 16, at 10 am, for our monthly San Gabriel Valley Women Writers meeting. We're excited to welcome new member Katharine Coldiron Mason, who will teach us how to Write Character-Driven Dialogue!

Literary dialogue is a strange beast. If it's too realistic, it comes off as boring and confusing to read, but too fanciful and it's implausible or even laughable. Striking that delicate balance depends on microtension, well-developed characters, and learning to write with the ear. We'll define and look at examples of all three elements, and then talk about how a single hand gesture can communicate them all. (No, it's not the middle finger.) Handouts will be provided. See you there!

Katharine Coldiron's work has appeared in Ms., the Times Literary Supplement, the Guardian, the Kenyon Review, and the Rumpus, among many other places. She is the contributing books editor at sinkhole and a Pushcart Prize nominee. Coldiron earned an MA in creative writing in 2017 and professionally reviewed more than 70 books in 2018. She lives happily in Chatsworth and at kcoldiron.com.

SGVWW meets monthly, usually on the third Saturdays (with a few exceptions in 2019), to network and learn about a different topic related to writing and publishing. Please come early so you can get breakfast before starting time.

See you on February 16!

San Gabriel Valley Women Writers (SGVWW) is a supportive and knowledgable community of women-identified and gender non-binary writers focused on helping each other further our writing goals. We meet in-person monthly, usually on the third Saturdays, to network and learn about a different topic related to writing and publishing. Our monthly talks are hosted by a variety of professionals and cover everything from tax laws to building a writer's website, from finding an agent and pitching publications to creating compelling characters and writing strong dialogue. Writers of all types are welcome: journalists, fiction and non-fiction authors, novelists, poets, bloggers, professional and amateur, etc. We also meet online in our Facebook group.
