THE ANNUAL HOLIDAY SHOPPING TRADITION THAT GETS COMMUNITIES EVERYWHERE OUT IN SUPPORT OF THEIR FAVORITE SMALL BUSINESSES

Flintridge Bookstore hosts special events for SMALL BUSINESS SATURDAY and INDIES FIRST, including four author meet and greets/book signings and two guest artists. Plus, there are store give-aways, a drawing to win a bag of books, and a Find the Niffler! contest. Come, join the fun, and show your support! SHOP SMALL!

 Small Business Saturday is a nationwide celebration started in 2010 to recognize the contributions indie businesses make to the communities they serve. Indies First is a national campaign of activities in support of independent bookstores held every year in conjunction with Small Business Saturday.

Aloura Charles, Sucked In! Treasure Island (Picture Book) - When nine-year-old Jasper discovers a hidden bookshop run by the mysterious Story Sisters, he falls through a bookworm hole and gets Sucked In! to the story of Treasure Island. His siblings must travel into the book to rescue him. Together the children face pirates, mermaids and shape-shifting tricksters! Will they be able to get the story back on track and return safely home? Sucked In! Adventure Book Series inspires kids to fall in love with the stories loved by their parents and grandparents. (Ages 5 – 14)

Aloura Charles graduated from Florida State University Film School and has worked with luminaries such as Ron Howard, Martin Scorsese, Gus Van Sant, and Sally Field. She is a screenwriter, has directed a documentary and several narrative shorts, and has won awards at film festivals. Charles is also a teacher and currently resides in Burbank, CA.

Jennie Palmer, Milo’s Christmas Parade (Picture Book) – Every year, Milo and his family watch the Christmas parade. Milo is riveted by the colorful costumes and fantastic parade floats. This year, with hard work and the support of his passel, Milo is determined to participate in the parade himself. After months of drafting and building, Milo’s float is ready to roll, but is the Christmas parade ready for Milo? (ages 4 – 8).

Jennie Palmer worked in production design for fourteen years, most notably for the Macy’s Parade Studio, before becoming an author/illustrator of children’s books. She is a graduate in illustration from the Rhode Island School of Design. She lives in Burbank, CA, with her family.

1:00 – 3:00 PM – Adult Book Authors

DC Frost, A Punishing Breed (Mystery) This mystery, set in Los Angeles, features Detective DJ Arias. Arias hunts for a murderer on a liberal arts campus that prides itself on its progressiveness but is rife with jealousy, racial and sexual tensions, and has a destructive hierarchy. During his investigation, with his dog Evidence as his companion, Arias begins to find clues to a crime born from a dark secret that will cast murder and destruction on the denizens of the campus. (Mystery)

DC Frost has worked at a small private liberal arts college in Los Angeles for almost twenty years. She loves Southern California, a melting pot of class and culture that she feels is often misunderstood in popular fiction and media. DC lives in Eagle Rock, CA, with her husband, an NPR journalist and reporter, and three rescue dogs. Their adult son is a Los Angeles filmmaker.

EP Tuazon, A Professional Lola and Other Stories (Short Stories) – This collection blends literary fiction with the surreal to present the contemporary Filipino American experience and its universal themes of love, family, and identity. Tuazon’s storiesare meticulously painted to make the absurd seem mundane and the commonplace sinister, and embody modern-day Filipino American virtues.

EP Tuazon is a Filipino American writer from Los Angeles. They have work in publications such as The Rumpus, Lunch Ticket, Peatsmoke, and Five South. Their work was chosen as the winner of the 2022 AWP Grace Paley Prize in Short Fiction. Tuazon currently resides in Valencia, CA.
