A one-day national party celebrating Indie Bookstores
Celebrate Independent Bookstore Day (outside and inside) at Flintridge Bookstore
Independent Bookstore Day celebrates bookstores nationwide on Saturday, August 29, with literary parties around the country. This year's activities at Flintridge Bookstore look a little different than in the past. Our celebration is scaled back in order to comply with health precautions (including requiring face coverings) during COVID-19 times. Our doors are open for in-store shopping, but our featured guests are greeting people outside the store.
Flintridge Bookstore has invited authors for signings and storytimes, as well as a jeweler, who shows her original designs. We also have giveaways and a drawing for various genres of books.
Independent Bookstore Day 2020 is especially meaningful. This year, more than ever, local bookstores and other small businesses need the support of their communities. This special day also provides an opportunity for Flintridge Bookstore to offer the community engaging outdoor activities and indoor shopping for COVID-19 times.
Here's is our program for the day:
* Make a purchase on Independent Bookstore Day and enter a drawing to win a selection of children’s, young adult, adult fiction, or adult non-fiction books.
* Giveaways!
On the sidewalk at the front entrance of the store on Foothill Boulevard:
11:00 AM - 2:00 PM:
Artist ANTHE WOSCZYNA of LITTLE MUSE DESIGNS shows her seed bead and gemstone jewelry, including new styles
11:00 AM - 1:00 PM:
MEET & GREET DAVE D’ORAZI, author of The In-Between Artist: The Story of Tony D’Orazi, a biography about the Disney animator who was the first cartoonist of radio and TV. Written by his son, the book is based on the artist’s diaries and scrapbooks going back to 1932.
1:30 PM - 3:30 PM:
MEET & GREET APRIL DAVILA, author of the novel 142 Ostriches. Set against the unexpected splendor of an ostrich ranch in the California desert, this fiction debut conjures an absorbing and compelling heroine in a story of courage, family and forgiveness.
Please share why you love bookstores on the huge banner on our windows. Post a photo of yourself in front of the store and tag #bookstoreday2020.
Outside in the back of the store (near the parking lot off of Beulah Drive):
11:00 AM - 1:00 PM:
STORYTIME with JULIE BERRY, author of Happy Right Now (ages 4-8), an illustrated picture book that teaches the best way to be happy is to embrace the circumstances we find ourselves in each day. Berry also signs several of her other titles (picture books through young adult books)
1:30 PM - 3:30 PM:
STORYTIME with LINDA STEINBAUM, author of Kit 'n Kat: The Nose Knows (ages 6-7). For Kat, it's love at first sight when she sees Kit, an oversized, overly timid puppy with a gigantic nose. Kat enrolls him in scent tracking classes. Soon the duo finds themselves using Kit’s powerful sense of smell to dig up adventures at every turn.
Last year's Independent Bookstore Day author ambassador Tayari Jones said, "Indie stores stock books by hand and sell them the same way. They know what we want and need to read because they know us, as people. A writer is not a machine. A reader is not an app. We are human beings and so are the independent bookstore workers who show up each day and place books in our hands."
